Domenico Gabrielli (15 April 1651 or 19 October 1659 – 10 July 1690) was an Italian baroque composer and one of the earliest known virtuoso cello players. Hi was president of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna and musician at the court of Duke Francesco II d`Este of Modena. Gabrielli composed several operas as well as instrumental and vocal church works. However, he was best known for his virtuoso compositions for the cello, which earned him the nickname "Dominic of the cello".
This Aria from the opera "Clearco in Negroponte" is an wonderful example of the masterpiece where the cello is an equal instrument in dialogue with the vocal.
